Main Text:
The drilling fluid centrifuge is a core fine-separation device in mud solids control systems. It is primarily used to remove ultra-fine solid particles from drilling fluids (particle size < 2 μm) and can also separate weighted and unweighted drilling fluids, playing an irreplaceable role in high-end drilling operations.
Xi’an Black Rhino Industrial Co., Ltd. has developed high-speed drilling fluid centrifuges that combine high-efficiency separation with stable operational performance, making them the preferred choice for global high-end drilling projects.

The working principle of a drilling fluid centrifuge relies on centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation to separate solid particles of different densities from the liquid phase. When drilling fluid enters the rapidly rotating drum, heavier solid particles are forced against the drum wall by centrifugal force and discharged through a helical conveyor, while the lighter liquid phase overflows from the top, achieving highly efficient solid–liquid separation.
Xi’an Black Rhino Industrial’s centrifuges employ variable-frequency speed control, allowing rotational speed adjustments (up to 3200 r/min) based on drilling fluid properties. This enables precise control of separation efficiency, removing harmful solids while retaining valuable barite in the drilling fluid, avoiding unnecessary resource waste.
The centrifuge is applied differently depending on operational scenarios:
- In horizontal and directional wells, it effectively removes ultra-fine solids, maintaining drilling fluid mobility and reducing friction.
- In underbalanced or gas drilling operations, it rapidly separates entrained solid contaminants, ensuring stable drilling fluid performance.
- In environmental protection operations, it further removes fine particles from mud, facilitating subsequent zero-discharge mud treatment.
In an overseas high-end shale gas drilling project, Xi’an Black Rhino Industrial’s centrifuge reduced solids content < 2 μm in the drilling fluid to below 3%, significantly improving drilling speed and downhole safety, and earning high recognition from the client.
